How to Quit Job

Leaving a job could bring different feelings. Sometimes it feels like you are finally making a prison break, sometimes you struggle to quit your job because of the existing work relationship. It’s no longer in the 19th century when a fresh graduate would work with a company for thirty years building a career. Things have changed. Career development may demand even more than making a lot of transition to other firms. You may also wish to quit your job because you’re starting up your own firm.

How you quit a job is completely your choice. But courtesy demands that you give prior notification irrespective of how your employer would respond. But before doing so, be sure you are fully prepared to leave the office at that moment you’re giving the information, should things go haywire. It is supposed that your current job has a procedure on how to quit your job in the employee’s handbook. Don’t break the rules because you’re leaving, unless the employer decides to impose something different. That would also be your call to take, kindly leave if it’s too much for you to take. Though it’s important not to burn the bridge, some employer’s would leave you with no other choice.

Steps on how to leave your job will depend on your current status; if you have been employed somewhere else or not. Below are our steps on how to quit your job.

1) Plan the process carefully

If you’re leaving your work without another employment at hand, this process is solely for you. Note that people care about people useful to them. We know about losing friends when we don’t have a job. You have to be prepared psychologically and plan on how to retain or keep your contacts. Plan the route for your next challenge carefully and update your resume.

2) Disconnect your personality

It’s important that you prepare to leave abruptly in case your boss decides that you leave immediately after receiving the information. Delete all personal files from your computer and return all office equipment to your cubicle. Also, get the contacts you would like to keep without revealing your intent yet and be ready to work with the office for a few more days or weeks before stopping finally.

3) Inform your employer

You must do this politely and be ready to remain calm, even if your employer becomes abusive. Of course, it’s not supposed to be good news. Your letter of resignation must be readily available for submission. At this stage, you must also be ready to assist the office for at least two weeks. You also have the right to negotiate a different work schedule with your employer if he presents the idea. Be willing to assist the firm get over the inconveniences your absence would bring. The choice is yours to accept a consultancy arrangement if you don’t have a new job already or setting up your own firm. But, don’t compromise your prior arrangement if you have a timeframe to quit completely for another job. Ensure that your letter of resignation is submitted even if there was no peaceful resolution.
