Paying hefty bonuses and increasing salaries are not the only ways to increase employee motivation. Workers welfare has proven to be influential in employee engagement. And industry leaders such as Sir Richard Branson believe that employees should be prioritized before clients. That insight does not necessarily mean spending heavily.

To improve employee motivation without spending a dime means more success; more productivity, fewer expenses. A report from the society for human resource management shows that many companies fail to improve employee motivation; enthusiasm and commitment because they choose to use the money. That's more reason why managers should always seek for how to increase employee motivation without breaking the bank.

These are some ways to increase employee motivation with no practical cost.

Supply the right tools

Barriers experienced by employees go a long way to frustrate their motivation. Provide your employees with the appropriate tools necessary for their job functions. Don't let them miss out ongoing technology required for their duties or allow them to undergo obsolete stress to get their jobs done.

Provide training and coaching

Career development is a key element to increase employee motivation. Continual investment in their skills is a great move to improve motivation while also communicating how much the company values its employees. Training the employees will also help them to improve in their job functions, which is enough motivation to keep them happy in their positions.

Introduce flexible working hours

While this may not be applicable in every office, it serves as one of the effective ways of dealing with employee burnout. Allowing your workers to perform their duties at their time is a huge motivation. It supports your employees by allowing them to work at their most efficient moments while also providing quality service delivery.

Give individual attention

Communication is the only way to understand someone and not all your employees are very open. Finding time to engage them individually is a major way to earn their engagement. It provides avenues to understand the tasks an employee is most comfortable with and open doors of reasonable private criticism.

Be accessible and strike up casual conversation

Managers who cannot be assessed are losing motivation to the employees in many aspects. There is a loss of private opinion and information about pressing issues affecting employee’s productivity. The informal approach has no room for some complaints but accessible managers have no information to miss irrespective of how ugly it may seem. That's a lot of motivation.

Increase the fun at work

It is totally wrong if your employees see the office as a place that completely takes away fun. Promote cultural practices that integrate work and fun-filled activities. Some offices include "bring your pets’ day" in their fun curriculum as a measure to help employees feel motivated.

Legalize catnap

Catnap used to be unacceptable in a corporate environment, but not anymore. It’s gradually making the list of dumb HR policies that demotivate employees. A study by Harvard University revealed that catnap help workers to recover from early symptoms of burnout. Also, employees facing fatigue from multiple job roles may bounce back after a catnap. Motivation would be gone if there's no access for quick refreshment.

Recognize efforts in public

Some offices will rather go for a wall of fame; hanging pictures of employees with the best performance weekly. That's a positive way to increase employee motivation. Publicly praise their hard work and criticize privately. Remember you have hired trusted talents and that mentality should never be sidelined publicly.

I suggest a more holistic approach to employee engagement, one that consistently generates a multiple of investment. Industry leaders, like Southwest Airlines, Capital One and BHP Billiton, and hundreds of private companies empower employees to think and act like owners, driving and participating in the profitable growth of the company. This is one of the big reason they are industry leaders.
