Are you a workaholic? There’s nothing wrong in being dedicated to your work, but there is a thin line between following good work ethics and being a workaholic – the former is something you should be proud of but the latter needs a serious treatment. How to know if you have the traits of a workaholic? Well, you are always working; even when you are away from work, your mind is occupied with work-related thoughts. Still not sure if you are one?
Here are some traits of a workaholic that you need to watch out for:
- You work for more than 40 hours a week. I’m not talking about the time when you have excessive workload or need to meet a deadline – your usual working hours are longer than your colleagues.
- You don’t care about work-life balance. You frequently miss out family events and other personal tasks just because you are too much attached to your work.
- You measure your success with your salary. You constantly wait for a promotion or pay raise so that you can improve the quality of your life.
- You are distracted during your off hours. During weekends or during off-hours, you are constantly thinking about the work that you need to do as soon as you get back to the office.
- Your calendar is overscheduled. You take on tasks even when you have too much on your plate.
- You check your emails frequently. You are one of those people who cannot resist the urge of checking emails after every 10 minutes.
- You talk about work all the time. You often tune out when someone is talking to you about something that is not work-related. But when it comes to work-related conversations, you cannot stop talking.
- You work during your lunch hours. Instead of taking a real break from work, you keep on desk lunching and working during your break hours.
- When someone asks you about your hobbies, nothing strikes your mind. Unfortunately, working at the office is not a hobby!
- You are never satisfied with your work. It is good to strive for better, but expecting everything to be perfect might sound good only on resumes. When you are a perfectionist, you are never satisfied with the work that you or your team members do.
- You roll your eyes when someone utilizes all of their vacation days or weekends to spend time with their family. You never appreciate people who use their off hours for self-care.
If you have some of the above-mentioned traits of a workaholic, you need to bring an end to your habits and maintain a work-life balance or chances are, you will soon be suffering from job burnout.
