What Does An HR Generalist Do?

An HR generalist has the duty of supervising and assisting HR managers with all functions related to human resources. This includes the hiring/recruitment processes and the administrative aspect of human resources such as management of policies, programs, and procedures. HR generalists function in HR department development, employee relation, compensation, training and development, organizational development, and Human Resources Information System (HRIS).

Departmental development

  • Contributes to the establishment of departmental objectives, goals, and strategies.
  • Participates in developing guidelines, programs, and procedures to align the workforce with the company’s strategic goals.
  • Assists with budget monitoring.

Employee relation

  • Assists management in relating laws, human resources policies, and procedures to employees.
  • Recommends strategies to motivate employees and employee relation model most suitable in the company.
  • Assists in the investigation of complaints brought forward by employees.


  • Conducts extensive survey on employee compensation and prepares a payment bands suitable for employee retention.
  • Monitors the company’s salary structure and making of recommendations when necessary.
  • Helps to maintain payroll database.

Training and development

  • Partners with managers in selecting and contracting training consultants for external training programs.
  • Assists in the monitoring of development and corporate training budget.
  • Assists with the employee development plan, development strategies, and performance management system.

Human Resources Information System

  • Manages the database of employees and prepares reports that will be used in discharging various duties for all departments.
  • Manages all sections of Human Resources and utilizes HR software for the benefit of the company.

HR Generalist Resume

A Human Resource Generalist should possess at least a 4-year degree in Human Resources or other disciplines related to business and a PHR certificate. They must have in-depth knowledge of various “state and federal employment laws”

HR generalist salary has a positive trend. According to PayScale, Beginners at the entry level with less than five (5) years experience can earn a total compensation of $48,000 on the average based on a survey involving salaries of 6,846 anonymous participants. A Human Resources Generalist with more than 5 years experience can earn a total compensation of $53,000on the average, based on salaries of 4,141 participants. Fully experienced HR Generalist (minimum of 10 years experience) can earn a total compensation of $54,000 on the average based on salaries of 2,373 participants. And a Human Resources Generalist within the late career (minimum of 20 years experience) should expect a total compensation of $54,000 on the average based on salaries of 599 participants in the survey. Total compensations stated here include pay for overtime, bonuses and tips.
